We want to thank Dan Phoenix from Mass BJJ for stopping by during his vacation in Hawaii. He showed some great submission and pass details in class. Come back any time.
A special holiday surprise, Emile Suehiro stops by to teach some awesome techniques. Emile started with Relson back when he was 11. Good times.
This is an interview with Matt Thornton covering methods of training in the martial arts centered specifically around Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Very good podcast and informative. Thank Springer for link.

Grandmaster Relson Semininar from 7-8 PM Black Belt Ceremony: 8 PM The Final Leg is here.
Support. Our appreciation to Romolo for being a major part of bridging teams from around the pacific to compete in one location. It's a hard and sometimes a thankless job to put on these events. However, it is extremely necessary to help develop Hawaii's competitors and getting them razor sharp in a safe and orderly environment. Tournaments are always difficult yet the HTC Team has made some great adjustments. We hope everyone decides to come out. Support local. RSA will be starting a women only class on Wednesdays from 7:30 - 8:30 and Fridays from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. The first class will be held on:
JANUARY 4th 2017 (6:30 PM) Those serious to join can pre-register by calling Justin and will get 20% off the registration fee (regularly 50.00) and 20% off the first month of training. Tuition is 100.00 per month. Read more on the women's class by clicking on the Course Information Page (Scroll down to the appropriate class description). RSA will be closed on Labor Day. Enjoy your day off and be safe. Tuesday back on as usual.
Jay is back on Oahu for a few weeks after a string of competition wins including the IBJJF Boston Open to the Masters World Championships in Las Vegas. Come train with Jay when you have a chance, he's a really nice guy with great technique and was just awarded his Black Belt by Cyborg in Florida.
AJ Mendoza takes 2nd in the Masters Brown Belt division with Benel Prios and Kevin Ko making it to the quarerfinals. Special shout out to Jay Oliveira who won gold in his division and received his Black Belt on the podium from Fight Sport teacher Cyborg. Great job guys.
Max had the good fortune to train with one of our old mat partners and expert canine trainer Chris Moon. Despite his busy schedule, Chris took on Max as a pet project (pardon the pun) and has helped him make some great strides with his behavior. Chris applies the same all-in approach to training dogs as he did in the past while working with high regard on two governer protection details in Hawaii and as a true boxing and Jiu-Jitsu artist. He is an honest person with great integrity and will do wonderful things for your favorite four-legged buddy.
Go to www.mooncorsos.com for more information. Congratulations to Ava Hipa on receiving her Yellow Belt. Ava is one of the hardest working kids at the school and does well in competition. Keep up the good work Ava!
Small Kid Classes (ages 4-7) are now from 5:15-6:00 PM with Advanced Big Kids from 6:15-7:15. Just a side note, we often run Big Kid Classes overtime so plan to stay over from time to time. Thank you for your continued dedication and support to the members and staff at RSA. It is greatly appreciated.
Rhalan Gracie (son of Grandmaster Relson Gracie) will be coming to RSA to perform a special seminar. Below is a message from Rhalan himself describing the details of our upcoming event:
Aloha my friends! I'm very happy to share with each of you that I'll be visiting the beautiful islands of Hawaii later this month! Come join me on the mats in paradise Tuesday, June 28th from 6:30-8pm at Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu - Ronn Shiraki Academy where I'll be going over some of my latest and greatest jiu-jitsu techniques to date! This is a LIMITED opportunity and I am very excited to be present for this event and share some of the knowledge that has helped me immensely throughout my jiu-jitsu career! Mark your calendars, June 28 at 6:30pm! $30 admission fee and no experience necessary! Hope to see you there. Mahalo! Rhalan Gracie Thank you everyone for your support. Justin Nihei, Mitchell Johnson and Dustin Ching from the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Ronn Shiraki Academy will be competing tomorrow night (June 10th) at the Hawaii All-star event held at the Blaisdell Center starting at 8:00 pm. We are hoping for a great showing by all three of them. Please come and support the guys! Upon arrival, look for a motley crew looking sexy.
RSA will be closed in remembrance of our fallen. To all of our men and women in the armed forces, thank you.
Hawaii's longest running BJJ organization for competition - now partnered with Rickson Gracie and the Jiu-Jitsu Global Federation - will hold their next tournament starting on June 11. The JJGF is fast becoming the new standard in fusing sport Jiu-Jitsu and reality based martial arts. Ramp up training now. For those wanting to take their art to the next level, we highly recommend the Talent Code by Daniel Coyle. Main points include the idea that all humans possess the ability to gain mastery in a specific activity regardless of genetic inheritance. The core concepts include deep practice and increasing myelin through repetition: the key to mastery. Great read. Kalani helping the guys after class. RSA upper belts are encouraged to help the lower belts learn and feel welcomed. Great mentors aren't perfect but strive to be better every day and pass on knowledge.
Please wear a clean Gi every time you come to class. Training Jiu-Jitsu in Hawaii's humid climate can increase the growth of bacteria and fungus: pathogens that love damp and sweaty Gi fabric. Plus it smells bad.
Thursday Jiu-Jitsu daytime classes are back in full gear: Ronn, AJ, Shane, Carter, Kalani, Bob, Benel, Conner, Mike, Kibo, and Nick.
Many of the photos that you see on the RSA website are by Steve Decker. If anyone is in need of a professional photographer that resides in the Honolulu area who has both a keen eye for beauty and an easy to work with attitude, we highly recommend that you give him a call.
