​Privileged to have humble beginnings stemming from Relson’s garages, U.H. mats, and the first Gracie academy atop Kaimuki in Hawaii, Laurent's Jiu-Jitsu journey started in 1993. The full appreciation of Relson’s technical approach to his father’s art wouldn’t come until 2000, while being relocated to Miami with the armed services. This move offered unique opportunities to train at academies from both Carlos and Helio’s side of the family tree, shedding light on Relson’s systematic teachings being completely unmatched by anyone else. After over a decade of travels, a return to Hawaii in 2013 led to meeting and befriending Ronn Shiraki. Reflecting on that connection: "I am truly honored and grateful at having been taken in by Ronn to train at his academy. His dedication to preserve Relson’s teachings in its purest form, as well as his loyalty to the system is bar-none world class!" Outside of the academy, Laurent is a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu and serves as the RSA Head Self-Defense Expert, responsible for preparing black belts to polish their readiness for testing.
